When the position of Program Director was introduced to me, I was terrified. My initial reaction was to refuse it as I didn’t think it would be something I was capable of doing. My whole life I have always stuck to what I’ve known. I’ve enjoyed the comfort zone! After much consideration and words of encouragement, I decided it was time to step out of my comfort zone and take the leap.
It has now been well over a year in this position and it has completely changed me both personally and professionally. I’ve grown to be a leader and become more assertive. I’ve gained a tremendous amount of confidence when it comes to making tougher decisions. I’ve also learned to give myself permission to take risks, and make decisions that in the past I would have shied away from.
Here are some ideas that I have found to be helpful when trying to avoid the comfort zone.
Be aware of what’s outside of your comfort zone
Figure out what you’re trying to overcome
Learn to embrace the discomfort
See failure as a learning experience
Take baby steps
Call yourself out when you’re trying to make excuses
Don’t take yourself too seriously
Stepping out of your comfort zone will seem very scary. Take the first step and I am sure you will make it!
