August is recognized as National Wellness Month, according to the National Day Calendar. It is a time to focus on self-care, reducing stress, and initiating new and healthy habits.
Wellness can be an intimidating concept. How often are we able to balance eating, sleeping, and our physical/mental/emotional health all at the same time? Especially now, it is important to be gentle and forgiving of ourselves. It is also important to be celebrating the small victories we have throughout the day that support wellness. This could include enjoying a favorite song on the radio, enjoying some ice cream after a busy day, or getting out for a quick walk around the block. I encourage all of us to celebrate some small personal victories, as well as celebrate the victories of the individuals we support.
At Willow Haven, we have started a Wellness Calendar. Before the beginning of each month, staff and residents contribute ideas for every day of the month. Staff take turns facilitating these activities with the individuals and staff at Willow Haven. These activities could occur during groups, down time, privately, or in a small group. These activities have included:
Tie dying
Nature walks
Bonfires and s’mores
Complimenting others
Root beer floats
Vision boards
Yard Games
Stepping Stones
The National Calendar website offers other ideas and social media hashtags if you are looking for more ideas for yourself or your facility!
